A few weeks ago, I shared with you that I am about to celebrate a milestone birthday this summer and I am using this occasion to execute my “Be Strong” plan. Because I was starting to find that my body wasn't always ready to handle whatever it was I wanted to do- whether that was spending a few hours weeding and dividing perennials (all that bending over left me with a stiff back), going on a hilly nature hike with my kids (my aching knees!), or even swimming laps in the pool (why am I so out of breath?). If I want my body to be ready for me, then I need to dedicate some time to making this body strong!
One of the concrete commitments that I have made to myself this summer is that I am going to make time to exercise- specifically to take a 45-minute “power walk” five days a week that gets my heart pumping, and to get back into a daily yoga practice which builds my flexibility. I need both a strong heart and strong flexible muscles for many more years- and I can't allow my latest birthday to lead me down the path to muscle loss (which happens as you age) and a less active lifestyle. So here's how I am going to do it:
Schedule My Walk and Yoga Time on my Calendar
I say make time to exercise because I know how easy it is for me to say “I just don't have the time in my already overloaded schedule” especially when the kids are out of school for the summer. So I actually plan to make this an appointment in my calendar so that I have set aside time every day to dedicate to cardio-walking and yoga.
Use a Step Counter to Keep Me Motivated
I love that my watch that has a built-in step counter (see the bottom dial) because it keeps me honest! During the summer I start my day with 3-4 hours at my desk taking care of my work commitments and all it takes is a simple glance at my watch to see just how sedentary I've been! Seeing that little dial so close to the zero motivates me to MOVE THAT DIAL!

I love that is filled with plants and trees and frogs calling out to one another. I've seen deer, a turkey, and even a blue heron while out on my power-walk! And when I get into the small New England-style town, I love peeking into the store windows as I fly by- as if I am window shopping on vacation. These things make my heart swell with gratitude that I am healthy, strong and happy this summer.
And when I practice yoga- I prefer to do it when things are super quiet at my home and I focus on just one word. It might be “breathe” or “peace” or even “gratitude”, and I dedicate all of my poses to that word. So while I am working my muscles I am also finding peace and happiness in my mind!

And whether you are 30-40-50 or outside of this age range… I encourage you to think about how you can make time in your schedule this summer to be good to your body too.
