We are right on the cusp of “history-in-the-making” here…. with the possibility of “California Chrome” winning the 3rd leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday afternoon! Even if you are not normally a horse-race-watching type of family….If your kids love horses, love to cheer, and don't have a long attention span- this is a great family event to watch together! So to help you plan your weekend Triple Crown Party- I pulled together a few ideas for you!
Hold a family-room screening of “Secretariat” on Friday night- to remind everyone of the history behind the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, the Belmont, and probably the greatest horse in history. (Amazon affiliate link)
Party Day Decorations
“Traditionally, the Belmont Stakes winner wears a blanket of white carnations in the winner's circle. The blanket, which takes about 10 hours to make, contains 300 to 400 carnations which are glued onto a green velveteen cloth. A similar blanket done on green felt is draped on the base of the statue of Triple Crown winner Secretariat in the paddock. The white carnations usually come from either California or Columbia.” (About.com)
Why I certainly don't encourage you to take 10 hours to make a replica of the white carnation blanket(!), a quick trip to the grocery store for a bouquet of white carnations arranged in a short vase on the table will set the party mood! Arrangement above from Eat-Drink-Garden.
Mix Up Some “Belmont Breezes”
Considered to be the signature drink of the Belmont Stakes- these are made with bourbon, sherry, simple syrup, lemon, orange, and cranberry juice- this drink was created in 1998 by Rainbow Room bartender Dale DeGroff. Full recipe can be found at Palm Beach Illustrated.
And wouldn't they be adorable served in mason jars with a vinyl cut horse like these created by See Vanessa Craft?
Play “New York, New York”
Put on some music before the race…. “New York, New York” is what is traditionally played prior to the bugle's call.

or of course, maybe BOTH!
Triple Crown Party Games
I love this party game idea for kids horse racing. Kids roll the dice and move forward the corresponding number of spaces until they reach the finish line! Idea courtesy of Kids Parties at About.com.
How are you going to enjoy the race?
