If my kids were the ones writing this post, they would list about a dozen electronic items that they would love for Santa (or his “minions” as my older kids have decided to call Santa's parental helpers!) to leave under the tree this year….. iPad Minis, Wii Us, XBox 360s, PS Vitas, and Nintendo DSs would all make the list. The reality is that we have many of these items in some (earlier) form or another- so why in the world would we need the new ones (okay I am not 9, or 10, or 12 so I don't “understand”….)? So instead of fulfilling these e-wishes, I put together a list of ideas to inspire my kids- to seek new hobbies- to build-upon interests they already have and take them further or in a new direction. So here is my Gift Guide of 10 Gifts to Inspire Your Kids!
1. Love Math?
If you have a child who enjoys learning math and catches on quickly to basic logic games, then chess might be a perfect gift for him or her! This cool chess game incorporates playing cards for kids who are new to the game to help them to learn the pieces and the movements associated with each piece. As kids become more proficient, cards can be used differently or can be eliminated altogether.
2. Love to Draw?
If your child loves art class and is ready to take their tools to the next level, why not buy them this beautiful (and well-priced) portable art set? My kids take theirs along on long car rides and also use them to entertain themselves when stuck at a sibling's gymnastics class or soccer practice!
3. Into Cool Gadgets?
If your child loves electronics and wants to learn how to create their own…. this little robot made from a tin can is a great place to start!
4. Into Arts and Crafts?
My kids love art class, so I wanted to channel their enthusiasm and provide some new creative outlets. How about the art of paper quilling? The idea is to turn thin strips of paper into beautiful works of art by curling them and combining them!
5. Does Your Child Like to Collect Things?
If you are constantly finding small objects in pants pockets when you do the laundry each week, you might have a budding collector on hand! Give your child something to collect and learn about… coins!
And don't forget the cool book in which to store their new treasures!
6. Loved Learning about Colonial Times?
My kids loved learning about candle making in early America, but since I am not quite ready to allow them to melt paraffin on their own yet, these beeswax rolled candles are a great first step towards candle making!
7. Into Magic?
This fantastic book is a great instructional manual for pre-teens who want to impress their family and friends!
8. Love Pictures?
My kids love looking through the scrapbooks that I've created for them over the years, and some of them are anxious to start creating their own! This is a great first kit to get them started!
9. Love Taking Pictures?
This book can help a budding digital photographer learn the tricks to take better pictures, and give them some inspiration of cool things to do with their photos!
10. A Budding Animator?
My kids love to draw and this year enrolled in an after-school class on stop-motion animation, so I thought it would be fun to build upon this interest and give them some new tools to perfect this talent at home!
