We're getting close to the end of summer here…. so before the sun sets on our summer, it's time to have some fun with the kids in the backyard with some family backyard games! Luckily you probably have everything you need- right in your garage. Just waiting for you…
The Kennedy family was known for their family football games…. we Rowleys are famous for our family baseball games. The rules are flexible (and often include tagging the runner out by winging the tennis ball at them!), and we have to work around obstacles such as the giant maple tree in our front yard. But it is a guaranteed-good time!
We've been known to set this up in the traditional manner, or sometimes as a means for playing “wacky croquet” and getting our sillies out! Wacky croquet can be constructed any way you'd like- hit the ball through the hoop and then do 15 jumping jacks before moving on…. or run around the house once, or sing a loud song.
We gave our kids an in-ground basketball hoop for Christmas a few years ago because I remember from my own childhood what a great vehicle shooting hoops can be for kids to talk- to each other and to their parents. Have a bad day? Go outside and shoot baskets with your brother… and pretty soon you'll be talking out your troubles. It is also fun to divide up the family into teams and play a little 3 v 3!
This is a game that is fun to play in the backyard even if you have no real talent for it. Just set up the net, pass out the rackets and birdies, and see if you can get those birdies to fly!
Water Balloon Fights
We keep several packages of water balloons on hand at all times. They are the perfect boredom buster when the kids are tired of riding bikes and are starting to argue with one another. Throw out some bins of pre-filled water balloons, and the entire afternoon changes course!
