With a husband and a son with allergies, we decided that a non-shedding dog would be the right way to go for our family. Of course we fully realize that even non-shedding breeds still drop pet dander in the house, which is what triggers the allergies. But years of experience have also taught us two things:
1. You tend to build up a tolerance to your own dog's dander. You can be fine at home and have little to no reaction to your own dog- even when you are lying on the floor and cuddling up with him…. but go into someone else's house who has a dog… and BOOM! You are clinging to that rescue inhaler!
2. There's a “psychological” aspect to allergies too. Back when we had a golden retriever that produced “tumbleweeds” of dog hair that drifted across our wood floors, the mere sight of all of that dog hair was enough to send my husband for a breath of fresh air outside!
So having a dog that doesn't shed constantly is certainly a plus! But if you are living with a fur friend who leaves you little gifts of hair everywhere…. there is something you can do about it!
Did you know that some people don't even want to get a dog because they are concerned about the mess and shedding? C'mon people…. all you need is the right tool for the job- and you can manage the messy part of pet ownership! Because the rewards of having this lovable bundle of fur for your kids to play with, and to be your constant companion is worth the few minutes it takes to clean up after him!
And beyond just pet hair…. Swiffer also helps me with all of the other messes that Bentley manages to make:
Like the leaves that he brings into the house every time he comes in from outside this time of year!
And the dirt that manages to drop from his paws and onto my floors!
And the graham cracker crumbs from the one that he stole off of my daughter's plate at the coffee table! (Why won't my kids ever learn to make food inaccessible to the pooch?)
It is so easy to use my swifter mop to quickly gather together all of the debris and then using the cloth, pick it up and toss it into the trash.
Plus have you ever noticed that when dogs (and kids) are around, wood surfaces seem to gather dust faster?
So as for this cute fuzzy face? Well I am keeping him around! And my Swiffer products too!
The Big Green Box
Check out my video where I surprise my friend Meredith with a Swiffer Green Box, to help her clean up after her new fur friend, Eva!
I'm Headed to the Swiffer ASPCA Pet Event!
Swiffer® is supporting the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA) in a year-long effort to help find homes for animals in need and help make the challenges of cleaning up after a pet less of a concern after adoption. Swiffer® will donate Big Green Boxes to more than 100 shelters nationwide and will gift each of an estimated 7,000 pet adopters with a free Swiffer Sweeper during the ASPCA Mega-Match-A-Thon weekend in October 2014! How amazing is that?
And later today I am headed into the city to attend a special Swiffer Pet Event to recognize the work that Swiffer and the ASPCA is doing to help find homes for animals! And attendees are invited to bring along their dogs or cats to share in the festivities! As far as Bentley goes…. um…. no I don't think so. Unless I plan to spend the entire event trying to restrain him as he claws his way across the floor to check out every other dog there. But I will be taking photos of other pets and let you know how the event goes!
What's your biggest challenge in cleaning up after your pet? And would you (or did you) let it stop you from owning a dog or a cat?
