This post is part of our new MomOf6 series that asks bloggers: “How Do You DO It?”
One of the things that always interests me when I meet women who have both built a successful blog business while also running a household is understanding how in the world they “manage it all”! I know from my own life that there is no such thing as a “perfect balance” and that we are constantly juggling dozens of tasks on any given day. But I think that we can all learn from one another by sharing our strategies and what is currently working (and not working!) for us. So today, I am interviewing Amanda Rodriguez from Dude Mom to learn all about her approach to juggling life and blogging!
I've know Amanda for years now… she is my go-to person for questions related to blogging and working with brands, and becoming more awesome on social media! Amanda is amazing, and smart, and fun, and you might even recognize her from “What Not to Wear” (which strikes me as SO funny- because she ALWAYS knows exactly what to wear!) Of course, she is also a Mom to three dudes- and one of our kids even shares a holiday/birthday- St Patty's Day!
So Amanda…When and why did you begin blogging?
I started, tentatively, at the very end of 2008. It was basically a trial run featuring really terrible writing and equally bad photos. I did it because a friend told me about this thing called “mom blogging” and she thought I was as funny as much of what she'd read online by others.
Okay- I already know all of this…. but share some details with MomOf6 readers about your family and what you love to do in your personal life…
Married mom to three sons, 7, 10, & 13. Personal life? Hmmm, you mean like outside of parenting, blogging, taking photos, and volunteering? Okay, sleep and eat, pretty much that's all I have time left for!
What does your family think about your work as a blogger?
They love it because it benefits them and I am home in the morning and home in the afternoon and home when they are sick and home all summer. Totally works in their favor.
How do you manage your time?
How much time per week do you dedicate to your site and related work (social media, appearances, etc)?
Ohhh, possibly more time than there even is in a week. Real talk, though, I'd say I put in at least 30 hours a week.
Do you keep “set” work hours?
Yes. Sort of. During the week I pretty strictly work 9-3. It's not a tied to my desk thing thought. I go to PTA meetings, and I hit the gym, and I pet the dog while I watch The Walking Dead. But, I won't talk to clients after 3 when my boys get home. And then 9pm-11 I work on writing and such. I put in a few hours on the weekend as well depending on my boys' schedule.

What do you outsource and what do you prefer to do yourself?
-Professionally. I do mostly everything myself. I do NOT do my own site design or maintenance. I can't without going insane so I outsource it (to a lovely lady named Krstyn from KrizzyDesigns.com).
-Personally. Nothing I mostly just neglect things I can't accomplish, or I ask my mama for help.
How's the household workload tackled in your family?
Me. ALLLL me. Until I lose it and yell and everyone works hard for few days to make it better. Kidding. They have chores that they forget to do and I remind them incessantly.
What tricks/tips/apps do you use to help you better manage your time?
Uhhh, the calendar on my phone?
How do you create a boundary between work time and family time?
I found myself getting really stressed out about everything that I was doing poorly at. I simply do NOT respond to emails or take calls between 3-9. It's the only way I can possibly maintain a family life at all.
What is your office set up like?
Do you have a dedicated space in your home where you “work”?
I have an office in my basement. Sadly I only visit it when I have to and prefer to work on my couch where my dog can keep me company and I can snuggle in my blankies while I work.
Now that I have you reflecting…
What do you wish you were doing more of?
On camera work. I like doing that, I feel comfortable doing that. I'm terrible at editing my own videos so if I had a dream situation I would have a camera set up in my house and a team of fairies to edit all of my videos so I look amazing and sound smart.
What do you spend too much time doing that wish you were doing less of?
Hmmm, tough one because I hate sending invoices, but I like making money!
Give us your words of wisdom!
What's the one golden nugget of advice that you have for Moms trying to build a blog and run a household?
Don't multitask too much. If you can focus on one thing at a time you and your blog and your family will all probably be happier.
