While I am still somewhat of a blog conference “beginner”, having only attended three of them since I started Momof6, I am already a huge fan of attending these industry get-togethers. And if you are a blogger and are wondering whether or not they are worth it… let me share with you 5 reasons to attend a blog conference.
1. Learn something new!
The chance to learn something new, be inspired by a new direction to take your blog, gain an in-depth understanding of something you are only vaguely familiar with. The very first blog conference I went to, I left with a great understanding of how to use social media to promote my blog- and that was the conference where I fell in love with Twitter. The next blog conference I attended I left inspired by the idea to begin blogging for Momof6. And when I left Type A Parent last weekend, I walked away with great information on how to craft a book proposal- if indeed I ever head that way.
I know that some bloggers go to conferences and never attend the sessions. But I am kind of the opposite- I am one of those people who reads every detail of the conference agenda, circling all of the different sessions that I would like to attend, and gets excited about all of the new information that I can learn.
2. Meet bloggers in real life that you adore online
When you are a blogger, you read lots of blogs… and there are people who you are just dying to meet. For me, Melissa Culbertson from MomComm was one of those people. I consider her to be my “blog mentor” and I just couldn't wait to have lunch with her on Friday. Even better- she and I were on the same Just Dance team (dressed all 80's style!) later that night!
3. Exchange ideas with your blogging besties
One of the best parts is spending time with your blogging buds talking about…. well, blogging! It is with these group of girls that I can ask all of my questions- should I stay in my ad network…. how can I improve my Facebook interaction, what do you think of working with so-and-so brand? And can we ever make “real money” doing this thing? (And by “real money” I mean the kind that will help send my kids to college!) The hours spent together hanging in our hotel room, or eating meals together are truly the very best part of going to a conference!
4. Connect with cool brands, websites, networks
In this area I am just “greener than green”….. I have absolutely no idea how to “connect” with brands, even when they are showcasing their wares at a paid sponsor table! But there is no better place to practice figuring all of this stuff out, than at a conference when brands are specifically there to meet bloggers and (hopefully) work with bloggers. And at Type A Parent I also had a chance to meet and connect with some fab people from Everyday Family and from The Blog Frog…. two groups that I didn't know much about before…. but can't wait to work with in the future!
5. A great vacation indulgence for yourself
And let's be honest here…. a Mom can always use a little “me” time…. and a blog conference absolutely qualifies!
