Ah March. All packed full of shamrocks and rainbows and leprechauns, all hopped up on the idea of “luck”. It's my “lucky day”, I'm a “lucky girl”, my kids are so very “lucky to be a part of our family”. But I've got issues with this whole concept of “luck”. So please- take a moment and pick it apart with me, shall we?
According to Google (does anyone even own a dictionary anymore?) “luck” is defined as:
“Success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions.”
The idea that we are so “lucky” my friends- is bunk. If you are a Mom, working her butt off all day long… it's not about “luck”. It's about what you are doing, have done, or are trying to do- it's about your actions!
I'm Not Lucky- And Neither Are You!
We wake up early and hit the treadmill. We get the kids out of bed, make them a warm breakfast and send them off to school with a kiss. We get in the car and drive to our office (or walk across the hall and sit down in our home office) and we plug away at our workload for a few hours trying to get things done, and earn some cash-ola for the family. We throw in a few loads of laundry, try to restore the kitchen so some semblance of cleanliness and then sweep down to pick up the kids from bus before spending the next four hours tackling homework, carpooling to activities, and making a delicious healthy dinner that they may or may not eat. Then it's time to help the kids get cleaned up, try once again to clean up that kitchen, and tuck the kiddos into bed before spending a few more hours on email, paying bills, filling out school forms, and squeezing in some one-on-one time with the hubster.
Are you feeling lucky about all of this? Heck NO!
Gratitude for this life and this family- YES!
Happiness in your heart? Absolutely!
But is all of this brought on “by chance rather than through one' own actions?” NO WAY!
You (and I) are working hard!
We are EARNING THIS!
We DESERVE it!
So let's OWN it!
And stop talking about “luck”. Because “luck” really has nothing to do with it. Unless you were magically dropped into your life by a leprechaun sliding down a rainbow of shamrocks.
Who's with me?
