From the time I was a little girl, my very favorite ice cream has always been Breyers Ice Cream. My father would be the one to take the bowls out of the kitchen cupboard and fill them with generous scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream which we would enjoy while we gathered in our family room to watch TV (Love Boat? Family Ties? Different Strokes?). I can't recall which show we watched, but I'll never forget the ice cream!
To this day, when I take my first taste of Breyer's Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream I am transported back to that time! And with my second bite I am glancing around at my own family and smiling that we are following the same tradition. So when I was given the opportunity to head down to Madison Square Park in NYC last Wednesday to celebrate Breyer's Ice Cream's 150th birthday- I couldn't say “yes” fast enough!
It was already a day well-worth celebrating, as my daughter Lili had “graduated” from the 5th grade, and the next morning my son Spencer would be “graduating” from the 8th grade- both events marked with “moving up ceremonies” that make me surprisingly emotional! (The other kids will be in 11th, 8th, 7th, and 5th grades in the fall). When we arrived, Madison Square Park was teaming with activity as people gathered to celebrate with Breyers! Our afternoon started with a trip through a life-sized Breyers carton…
And once inside, the kid and I had a chance to learn more about the history of Breyers- like how they have always started with high-quality ingredients, a promise that has been on Breyers' packages for more than 100 years.
Breyers Natural Vanilla, America’s #1 vanilla ice cream, is made with fresh cream, milk and sugar. Breyers only uses milk and cream from cows not treated with artificial growth hormones*. The vanilla that goes into Breyers' products is 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified, and comes from sustainable vanilla farms in Madagascar.
After our “carton tour” we got in line to enjoy some free scoops of ice cream!
My kids went right for the new Breyers Ice Cream Cake- which features Breyers Chocolate Ice Cream and loads of chocolatey crunchies, sandwiched between Breyers Natural Vanilla Ice Cream (created to celebrate their 150th birthday!).
I went right for my other favorite flavor- good old-fashioned Breyers Natural Vanilla (there's a reason it's America's #1 ice cream!).
Seeing how my crew of kids continues to grow up right in front of my eyes, and celebrating this occasion with a favorite family treat was a perfect way to honor the special day- both is the Rowley household as well as for Breyers! Summer has officially begun! *Suppliers of other ingredients such as cookies, candies and; sauces may not be able to make this pledge. The FDA states that no significant difference has been shown between dairy derived from rBST-treated and non-rBST treated.
