Whether our kids are spending their days at camp or hanging out with us, we all want them to have a summer filled with wonder, don't we? We want them enjoying the outdoors, exploring new places, having new experiences, and engaging in fun activities- and we strive so hard to make their summer adventures memorable, don't we?
Last week I decided to take my kids to see a local sculpture garden that had been closed for the last several summers due to renovation. I got everyone excited about it- loaded them in the car- drove all of the way… only to find out that the renovations weren't completed and the sculpture garden was still closed.
Not so wonderful.
My “bounce back idea” was to take them bowling. Even though some grumbled about it, and I had to buy 3 pairs of socks for the kids that wore flip flops, I got to experience one of these magical moments…. when an older sib teaches a younger one how to “really bowl”.
The next day, still wanting to walk amongst art, I decided to take the kids to another outdoor sculpture garden Storm King- the largest sculpture park in the US) and again they all were hyped about it, and piled into the car for the hour long drive across the Hudson river. Noting the darkening skies, I had the kids check the hourly weather forecast which assured us there was 0% chance of rain, so we paid our hefty admission fee and started walking the paths.
We weren't even there for 30 minutes before the torrential downpour hit us. We dashed back to the museum's open air cafe and waited out the storm under an awning before attempting to venture out again. And then met the next round of rain which soaked us completely head to toe. We ran to one of the enclosed exhibit buildings and waited for the skies to lighten. And in a bit they did- so we headed out for a bit more sightseeing, even dipping down into one of the fields to get closer to some of the larger than life pieces…. and then an enormous bolt of lightening lit the sky from cloud to the ground right before us…. so we turned and ran as fast as we could back to the building! And eventually- back to the car.
Not so wonderful.
But this time I had an even better bounce-back idea (after we went home and changed into some dry clothes!). I took the kids out for OREO milkshakes!
The taste of OREO cookies and ice cream all blended together in a delicious shake and topped with whipped cream- absolutely turned our rainy adventure into an awesome one!
