Some of the best houses to visit for trick or treating are the ones that are made up to look like haunted houses on the outside! Of course- this may put off some of the younger kids in the neighborhood- so only decorate if you dare! But if scary is the theme you're going for- here are some awesome haunted house ideas for you!
Haunted House Ideas for the Yard
You have to set the tone- and warn everyone who enters that danger lies within- and this set of 3 yard signs does it perfectly! They are double-sided so you can enjoy them entering and leaving!
And those “danger” signs look even better when nestled in between these foam tombstones !
Of course, you have to have some scary things hanging from the trees- like this cocoon corpse !
Hang this battery-powered flying bat with creepy light-up eyes from a tree- and it will have them wondering if it is the real thing!
And no haunted house is complete without scary screams coming from the somewhere in the dark as you walk up towards the house! Hang this scary sounds speaker in a tree off to the side of your walkway and it will be triggered every time a trick or treater passes the sensor!
Haunted House Ideas- Things That Peek Out From Your Windows
The neighborhood in Michigan where my husband grew up goes all out for Halloween every year! And thousands of people come from all over just to see the displays. And one of the coolest things I've seen there is when a house used a rear projection screen in their attic windows to display moving images of ghosts dancing in their attic.
And then I learned that this is actually pretty simple to do if you have a projector kit like this one . You simply hang the included screen in your window, place the projector 6-8 feet behind it, hook up a DVD player to the projector, and project the images you want onto the screen, suing “window mode”.
From the outside it will look like you have a houseful of ghosts, phantoms, and zombies!
An equally frightening idea is to place this scary doll in a window of a dimly lit room. Her eyes slowly glow on and off- and there is a soundtrack of her speech that trick or treaters can hear if you leave the window open!
Haunted House Ideas for Your Front Door
Your front door should be the focal point of your haunted house on Halloween night- and this Asylum curtain hints as to what's behind the door! They'll knock if they dare!
Or for another idea- it does not get any spookier than dripping words that glow in the dark under a black light!
This is actually super easy to do- you can check out Wanda's post over on From House to Home to see how she painted the words on her front door using laundry detergent and then lit up the space with a black light to make the words glow!
Adding a fog machine to your front porch also helps to hide what's behind the door, so that those approaching can't see until they reach the door!
Ideas for Just Inside of the Front Door
So now that you've set the whole tone leading up to your very haunted house- you want there to be a few surprises for the trick or treaters when you open your door! So set up a little table to hold your Halloween candy- as well as…
These framed moving pictures display a different image depending on the angle you are using! They'll wonder if they are seeing things!
This head in a jar positioned right next to your bowl of Halloween candy will freak everyone out!
These Halloween books will move and tilt on your table and are activated by motion and sound!
If you happen to dress up as a witch or a warlock to answer the door on Halloween night- this light-up crystal ball will be a perfect accessory!
If you have a wall behind you in your entryway- this motion-activated haunted mirror has a creepy ghost skull face that moves and speaks!
